 Chopin Festival 2006-2007 begins with solo recital by 2006 Winner of the acclaimed ARDMunich International Piano Competition, 23-year-old pianist Ben Kim.

their 2006-2007 Chopin Festival Season presenting the 2006 Winner of the acclaimed ARD Munich International Piano Competition, 23-year-old pianist Ben Kim, on Saturday, November 4, 2006 at 7:00 PM, at the Broward County Main Library, 100 S. Andrews Avenue in Ft. Lauderdale and on Sunday, November 5, 2006, 3:00 PM, at the Granada Presbyterian Church, 950 University Drive in Coral Gables. Admission to both concerts is FREE.
The 2006 Winner of the acclaimed ARD Munich International
Piano Competition, 23-year-old pianist Ben Kim's budding career has been accompanied by critical acclaim and numerous awards. It has taken him throughout the United States to such venues as Carnegie Hall and the KennedyCenter; and
to Austria, England, Germany,Italy, Ireland, Poland,Russia, Ukraine, and the Far East. Praised for the warmth of his sound and his heartfelt earnestness, his playing has earned the attention of his legendary teacher and mentor, Leon Fleisher, who has proclaimed Ben's "enormous potential for a first-class career."
"Sparks were flying from the keyboard," the Baltimore Sun
recently describes a performance of the Brahms D Minor Piano Concerto by the "substantially gifted pianist" with "power, precision, and feeling for the daunting score." Ben's 2006-07 itinerary includes a second concert tour through Japan and Korea, which was immediately reengaged after his first series of recitals in Asia the previous season, in addition to recitals in New York, Miami, Kansas City, Santa Barbara, Munich, and Rome.
Ben's 2005-06 season also featured recital performances
in New York, Dallas, Baltimore, Portland, Brunswick, Warsaw, Kiev, and Dublin. Seasonal orchestral highlights included performances of Brahms No. 1, Schumann, Chopin No. 1 and Rachmaninov No. 2 piano concerti.
In addition, Ben has garnered top prizes in numerous
competitions, including the Grand Prize in the 2000 World Piano Competition for Young Artists and most recently, First Place in the 2004 Yale Gordon Piano Competition at the Peabody Conservatory. Ben has also won the highest prizes in the Kosciuszko Foundation Chopin Piano Competition in New York and the MTNA National Baldwin Piano Competition.
Ben's performances have been broadcast on NPR. His recital
and chamber music performances also include the festivals of Aspen,Ravinia, MusicAcademy of the West, Bowdoin, Piano Festival Northwest, Salzburg, and Leipzig.
Ben began studying piano at age five with Dorothy Fahlman.
Soon after, he gave his first solo recital at age eight and made his orchestral debut at twelve. He has since performed as guest soloist with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Symphony, the Columbia Symphony Orchestra, the Oregon Sinfonietta, and the Far Eastern Symphony in Khabarovsk, Russia, among others.
In 2004, Ben finished an accelerated Bachelor of Music
degree program at the Peabody Conservatory as a student of Leon Fleisher. He has been continuing his studies at Peabody with Mr.Fleisher together with pianist and teacher Yong Hi Moon as a candidate for the Artist Diploma program, the school's highest distinction.
Beginning Fall 2005, Ben was selected to attend the International Piano Academy Lake Como in Italy, a program for seven pianists, headed by pianists Martha Argerich and William Grant Naboré.
